2023: A Year of New Opportunities for Pakistani Women

The year 2023 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Pakistani women. For too long, Pakistani women have been unable to access the same opportunities as their male counterparts, but with new laws and initiatives set to come into effect in 2023, this could all be set to change. This blog post will explore the new opportunities that are set to become available to Pakistani women in 2023 and how they can take advantage of these new openings.

The current situation for women in Pakistan

Women in Pakistan face a multitude of challenges when it comes to finding employment and participating in the workforce. Despite making up nearly 50 percent of the population, women make up only 25 percent of the labor force. This is largely due to cultural attitudes that discourage female participation in the workforce, as well as inadequate access to education and resources.

Furthermore, women in Pakistan face a lack of job opportunities, and when they do find jobs, they are often low-paying and insecure. The jobs available to women are often limited to those traditionally designated as “women’s work” such as teaching, nursing, and cleaning. This means that there are few opportunities for them to pursue higher-paid positions or career advancement. Additionally, many women in Pakistan do not have the same access to financial services and capital that men do, making it difficult for them to start businesses or become entrepreneurs.

The situation for women in Pakistan is even worse in rural areas, where access to education and job opportunities is limited and gender bias is more pronounced. Furthermore, women in rural areas often face additional obstacles such as a lack of transportation, childcare, and basic infrastructure. These issues contribute to the high rate of poverty among women in Pakistan, where approximately 33 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

It is clear that much needs to be done to improve the situation for women in Pakistan. Fortunately, both the government and the private sector are taking steps to create more opportunities for women in the workforce.

The government’s initiatives to improve the situation

Pakistan has long been considered a patriarchal society, and women’s rights have not always been given due consideration. However, the Government of Pakistan is now actively working to provide better access to job opportunities for women. In December 2020, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the “Women Empowerment Package”, designed to promote greater economic participation by female workers. This package includes initiatives such as providing subsidised loans and grants for female entrepreneurs, improving access to technology and training, and extending maternity leave benefits.

The government has also launched several specialised programs in order to create more employment opportunities for Pakistani women. The Khadim-e-Punjab Programme aims to create jobs for 500,000 female youth in Punjab, while the Punjab Skills Development Authority has established skill development centres in various districts of the province that are dedicated to creating training and job opportunities for women. Moreover, the federal government is committed to implementing the Women Empowerment Package by providing 50 billion rupees over the next three years to support female workers.

The government’s efforts are being complemented by the private sector, which is taking steps to create more job opportunities for women. Companies such as Nestle, Unilever, and Engro have launched initiatives that focus on creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, with an emphasis on gender equality and inclusion. These initiatives are aimed at making workplaces more conducive for female employees and promoting their advancement within the company.

The Government of Pakistan is clearly taking proactive steps to improve the situation for women in the country, and it is encouraging to see private sector initiatives supplementing this effort. With continued support from the government and private sector, there is potential for significant progress in providing job opportunities for Pakistani women in 2023 and beyond.

The private sector’s role in creating opportunities for women

The private sector plays a vital role in empowering women in Pakistan. In recent years, private companies have been increasing their focus on creating job opportunities for women. Companies are actively recruiting women and providing them with the necessary training and support to help them succeed.

One such example is the Female Entrepreneurship Programme (FEP) launched by P@SHA in partnership with Google for Pakistan. Through this program, women entrepreneurs can access resources, mentorship, and guidance from industry experts. Moreover, it also provides a platform for them to network and collaborate with other female entrepreneurs in the country. This initiative has opened up a world of possibilities for women entrepreneurs in Pakistan, allowing them to grow and thrive in the tech industry.

In addition, several private organizations are launching initiatives to provide women with the skills and resources they need to become successful entrepreneurs. For instance, The Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) has established the Women Entrepreneurship Program to train women in different areas such as business plan development, marketing, and financial management.

Furthermore, many companies are implementing policies and practices that foster gender equality in the workplace. These include policies such as equal pay, flexible working hours, parental leave, childcare allowances, and paid internships for young women.

Overall, the private sector is actively playing its part in creating more job opportunities for Pakistani women. With initiatives such as the FEP and PSDF, we are optimistic about the potential for female entrepreneurs in the country. With the right support and resources, we believe that Pakistani women can make a great contribution to the nation’s economy and shape a brighter future for generations to come.
